(The Reluctant Poster Boy) -> Title
Singer-Songwriter Wang Lee Hom is a reluctant poster boy. As he told TODAY recently, shrugging his broad shoulders: "I'm just really bad at it".
While he is packaged as an idol for teenaged girls, Lee Hom admits he is hopeless when it comes to women.
Lee Hom, a 26-year-old Asian Amercian, recalled that a young woman approached him while he was hanging out with Backstreet Boys' guru, Adam Anders, in a Los Angeles club earlier this year. When she asked him where he was from, he didn't know what to say.
"Should I say 'I'm born in New York', or 'I live in Taiwan'?" he recalled thinking.
"Before I could come up with an answer, she walked away. she Probably thought I was a weirdo.
"And Adam was like: 'What's wrong with you, man? She just asking you a simple question!'"
Flashing a dimpled smile, Lee Hom explained his predicament.
:I'm kind of shy. I can think of approaching a girl but I back out after a while. Some guys can really work the room."
He would rather let his music do the talking... Speaking of which, the incident in the club gave birth to a new composition, What was I thinking, which is featured on his latest album, Unbelievable.
The 13-track album bears the influence of black music, borrowing hip-hop grooves (and a good degree of :hipness", too.)
"It's unique," Lee Hom noted with pride. "There's nothing else like this album in Mandrain music. The only thing is, it could be too 'new'. People may not be used to it."
He denied riding on the growing popularity of black music. Responding to the fact that, for the first time in history, the top 10 songs on the US Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart in October were by Black artisties, he said: "I think that's just a coincidence. It's been clear for years that black music is dominating the pop industry.
"Look, there's the King of Pop, Michael Jackson; Whitney Houston; and of course, Stevie Wonder."
Then, Lee Hom - visibly weary for the most of the interview - bent over and said excitedly: "I'm going to see Stevie Wonder in concert in Japan next month!" He then gushed about his No 1 idol. "He's a genius! He has basically single-handedly changed Motown in the R&B sound. He's just amazing. His innovation, his sincerity and passion for music... "I'm going to meet him for the first time next month but I feel like I've known him for a lifetimes!"
So, has he thought of what to say to the music maestro... err, in case he stumbles again?
"No, it's not going to have a problem," he said, chuckling. "I have no problem communicating with a musician. I only have that with a girl."
That's all, sorry if there is any typing mistake. Enjoy reading!
Cheers
