Ok so as most of you know I have a favorite Chinese singer named Wang Lee Hom. It was 10pm and I was reading my book about to go to sleep when I get a text message from my friend Mia...she says "ok don't scream but Lee Hom is at this club I am at, I just recognised him". So what did I do?? I got on my phone and rang her, got all the details about how he looked what he was wearing and how good a view she had of him. Turns out this club was just a tiny jazz club that holds a maximum of 60 people...imagine that being in such close proximity of your favorite singer.
I get myself dressed and made up in record time, ring her to check that he is still there and hasn't left the club and hop into a taxi. As soon as I walk in the door of the club I ask her where he is and she points him out. Apparently according to my friend Esmerelda I was in a daze as soon as I walked in the door. I sit myself in a position that enables me to keep an eye on him. For a about an hour and a half I watched him just chill out with the other celebrities that he was with, jamming to the music and just enjoying himself. In all honesty I would have been happy with that, just to see him in that atmosphere was amazing.
Anyways at midnight the live music stops and next thing you know he is up there offering to play drums, and another famous chinese singer gets up with him and starts singing some Jazz songs. Again I was in my prime, it was sooo awesome to see and hear him play...he was really good and had this cute look of concentration on his face the whole time. You could tell that he was having a really good time and he was so relaxed and happy.
He played a few songs with the rest of the band for about half an hour and went back to sit down. My friend Wendy had said that as soon as they sat down she was going to go and ask for a picture with the table of celebrities that were there. There was another famous singer named A Mei they wanted a picture with (think britney spears status and they you will know how famous she is here). So Wendy asked and the girl that was singing the Jazz songs took it as she was only asking her and was like sure and stood up. Anyways we got a picture with her and she was really nice, she was talking to us about music and what not and thanking us for being such a good responsive audience cause not many people in Taiwan appreciate Jazz music.
The whole time we were talking to her Lee Hom was about 50cm's away from me and I was slowly working up the courage to talk to him. He went back to the drums to get his shoes and after he came back I called his name I was like "Lee Hom do you mind if I get a picture with you?" he was like "uhhh a picture, sure". But before we actually took the picture I had a conversation with him it went something like this:
Me: "I actually went to your book signing a few weeks ago, people thought I was strange cause I was the only white person there. They kept asking me if I was a Lee Hom fan and I told them I was"
Lee Hom: "Oh really, well thank you."
Me: "I actually first saw you in Shanghai"
Lee Hom: "Shanghai really?"
Me: "Yeah my students introduced me to your music and I bought your CD and went to your autograph signing".
Lee Hom: "Wow, Thank You...what's your name?"
Me: "Jo" and he shook my hand
Lee Hom: "Nice to meet you Jo, where are you from?"
Me: "Australia, so you see that makes it worse noone knows who you are and my friends are all like who is this guy you like?"
Lee Hom:"Well you know music has no boundaries.....Thank You".
My friend actually took a picture of me while I was talking to him and he was like "oh candid shot"...then we took a proper picture and he left to go to the bathroom.
About 10 minutes after this encounter Lee Hom jumped on the Piano and another famous singer took the mic. For a good hour they alternated between singers and english and chinese songs. It was so awesome being able to hear him sing and play the piano live in such an intimate atmosphere. I was less than a metre away from him the whole time he was playing the piano and singing. At this stage it was just them and my table in the club.....we were clapping and cheering them on while they were singing. At one stage Lee Hom thanked the 'foreign friends' in the audience then proceeded to list all the countries we were from, he specifically said 'our Australian friend' I was in heaven he he.
Ok this has turned into somewhat of a novel, I just wanted to relay all the events of the evening. It was every fans dream getting to be in such an intimate setting with their favorite singer. I will scan and send pics out as soon as I can.
